Proprietors Iris Arguelles and her father, Rafael Arguelles, who also own Latin Quarters in Sarasota Commons on Beneva Road, have transformed the space with a new kitchen, large bar area and dining room seating a total of 150 diners with plans to add outdoor seating in the near future. Boldly colored artwork by Sarasota artist Kathie Gail O’Neal enhances the walls while the blend of Florida tropical with Latin American accents creates an upbeat, cheerful ambiance.
The expansive menu includes handhelds, appetizers, salads, soups and stews, numerous entrees and house-made desserts. There are green plantains, Puerto Rican-style sausages, fried cod and tostones for appetizers with oxtail stew or seafood soups.
The signature dish is mofongo, which is plantain bowls filled with choice of chicken, steak or seafood. Bandeja Paisa is another favorite, a traditional Christmas pork roast and plantain dish, which they serve all year. There is also seafood such as red snapper, churrasco, arroz con pollo, paella, and ropa vieja.
