Haleem recipe for ramadan

recipe for a popular Ramadan dish called “Haleem”:


  • 1 cup of Broken Wheat
  • 1/2 cup of Masoor Dal (Red Lentils)
  • 1/2 cup of Chana Dal (Split Bengal Gram)
  • 1/2 cup of Moong Dal (Split Yellow Gram)
  • 1/2 cup of Urad Dal (Split Black Gram)
  • 500 grams of Boneless Beef or Mutton
  • 2-3 Onions, sliced
  • 2 Tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of Ginger Garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon of Red Chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon of Garam Masala
  • 1 teaspoon of Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup of Oil or Ghee
  • 1 tablespoon of Lemon juice
  • 2-3 tablespoons of Fried Onion
  • 2-3 tablespoons of Coriander leaves, chopped
  • 2-3 tablespoons of Mint leaves, chopped
  • 1 Lemon, sliced
  • 1 inch piece of Ginger, sliced
  • 6-8 Garlic cloves, sliced
  • Water as required


  1. Wash and soak the broken wheat and dals (lentils) in water for 3-4 hours.
  2. In a pressure cooker, heat the oil or ghee and fry the sliced onions until golden brown.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes, ginger garlic paste, and all the spices. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
  4. Add the boneless beef or mutton and fry until the meat is browned.
  5. Add the soaked broken wheat and dals along with enough water to cover everything. Add salt to taste and pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or until everything is well cooked.
  6. Once the pressure is released, open the lid and mix everything well using a ladle or a hand blender. The haleem should have a smooth and creamy consistency.
  7. Add lemon juice, fried onions, coriander leaves, and mint leaves. Mix well.
  8. Heat a small pan with oil and fry the sliced ginger and garlic until golden brown. Add this to the haleem and mix well.
  9. Serve hot with a slice of lemon and garnish with fried onions and chopped coriander leaves.
